Prof. Edwin J.J. Momoh Retires as UMC Conference Secretary, Urges Unity
After 16 years of dedicated service as Conference Secretary, Professor Edwin J.J. Momoh has officially announced that he will not seek re-election for the position in future United Methodist Church (UMC) elections. Speaking to the press on March 5, 2025, at the 145th Annual United Methodist Conference held at Urban Center, Kissy, the revered clergy emphasized the need for unity and inclusivity within the church.
Prof. Momoh disclosed that while he still enjoys the support of many, he believes it is time to step aside and allow others the opportunity to lead. He assured the congregation and church leadership of his continued commitment to the ministry, stating, “I’m just a phone call away to assist when called upon.”
A Call for Unity and Reconciliation
In his address, Prof. Momoh made a passionate plea for unity within the UMC, urging all members to set aside past grievances and work together for the growth of the church. He referenced biblical teachings to underscore that the church is not a place for division or opposition but a sanctuary for love, peace, and collective service.
Reflecting on the tensions that arose during the previous UMC elections, he urged aggrieved candidates to embrace the leadership of newly elected Bishop James Boyie Caulker and support his vision for the church. At the same time, he called on those who emerged victorious not to use their positions to marginalize others but to promote inclusivity and reconciliation.
“I was among the contenders for a position, but I lost. That does not in any way deter me from serving humanity and the church,” Prof. Momoh stated, emphasizing that leadership is about service, not personal ambition.
The Priceless Nature of Service
When asked about his experiences serving in the church, Prof. Momoh described service to humanity as “priceless.” He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and encouraged others to lead with sincerity, stating, “When one serves with sincerity, he will surely reap the fruit of his labor. I am a testament to that.”
Though stepping down as Conference Secretary, Prof. Momoh reaffirmed his continued role as a senior clergy member and an active participant in the church’s activities. He assured members that his passion for ministry remains unwavering and pledged to support the church in whatever capacity he can.
As the 145th UMC Annual Conference concluded, his message resonated as a reminder of the importance of humility, service, and unity in the church. His decision to step aside while still offering guidance reflects a leadership style rooted in wisdom and selflessness one that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the United Methodist Church.
