Archbishop Tamba Charles Rebukes Ministry Over Safe Motherhood Bill

In a strongly worded statement issued on January 6, 2025, Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles of Freetown has refuted claims by Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information about his stance on the contentious Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill. The Archbishop, who also serves as President of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone, firmly denied that he had endorsed the government’s assertion that religious concerns had been fully addressed in the bill’s revisions.

“I dismiss the statement as false because I have not yet made any public statement on the proposed modifications of the Bill,” Archbishop Charles declared. His remarks were in response to the Ministry’s claim that he had expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts to incorporate religious sensitivities into the bill.

The Archbishop elaborated on recent developments, revealing that a meeting was held on January 2, 2025, between religious leaders and government representatives to discuss the bill. During this meeting, Archbishop Charles advocated for a comprehensive review of the proposed modifications by religious leaders before any public statements or endorsements were made.

He explained, “The document was sent to me on Friday, January 3, 2025, and I immediately shared it with all executive members of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone and other key religious leaders. We are currently studying it, and we will convene soon to prepare our collective response to the proposed modifications.”

The Archbishop emphasized the importance of accuracy and transparency in public discourse. “The Ministry’s statement does not represent my position as Chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sierra Leone or as President of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone. I urge all stakeholders to disregard the Ministry’s claims,” he stated unequivocally.

The Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill has sparked heated debates across Sierra Leone, particularly among religious groups concerned about its potential implications for moral and cultural values. Many religious leaders argue that certain provisions of the bill conflict with their faith-based principles, necessitating further dialogue and collaboration.

Archbishop Charles’s statement underscores the importance of inclusive and respectful consultations between the government and religious communities. His call for careful review of the bill highlights the role of the Inter-Religious Council in fostering dialogue and maintaining Sierra Leone’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance.

As a predominantly religious nation where Islam and Christianity coexist harmoniously, Sierra Leone relies on institutions like the Inter-Religious Council to bridge divides and promote mutual understanding. Archbishop Charles’s leadership in this matter signals the critical need for cooperation to ensure that legislation reflects the values and beliefs of the people it seeks to serve.

The ongoing discussions surrounding the Safe Motherhood Bill reflect broader challenges in balancing public policy with cultural and religious sensitivities. Archbishop Charles’s insistence on collaboration and truth underscores the path forward: one marked by dialogue, respect, and shared commitment to national progress.
