The Reformer Calls for Protection of Journalist Thomas Dixon Amid Threats

The Reformer Newspaper expresses deep concern over the reported threat of arrest against Salone Times Newspaper Editor, Thomas Dixon, by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). According to reports, the threat follows a Facebook post by Mr. Dixon that was critical of the IGP, prompting him and his family to go into hiding out of fear for their safety.

“This continued pattern of threats of arrest, whether real or perceived, against journalists in Sierra Leone is alarming and leaves much to be desired,” the Editor of The Reformer remarked. “There are prescribed and lawful avenues to address concerns. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize the safety of our colleague, Thomas Dixon, while resolving the matter, including addressing the IGP’s concerns about unprofessionalism.”

The Reformer also commended the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) for the proactive steps it has taken to address the issue. SLAJ has consistently advocated for the protection of media practitioners and ensured that grievances involving journalists are handled in a fair and transparent manner.

Despite significant progress in recent years, including the repeal of Part 5 of the Public Order Act of 1965 and numerous engagements with security agencies on journalists’ safety, The Reformer is troubled by the persistence of such incidents. These developments appear to contradict government commitments to safeguarding media freedom and press rights.

The Reformer calls on the authorities to reaffirm their dedication to press freedom and to ensure that journalists can operate without fear of intimidation or harm. The safety of Thomas Dixon and his family must be guaranteed, and any grievances against him should follow due legal processes, free from threats or coercion.

This incident serves as a reminder that the fight for press freedom in Sierra Leone is far from over, and all stakeholders must remain vigilant in upholding the rights of journalists and the critical role of the media in a democratic society.
