MMTU Celebrates Dr. Dennis Sandy’s Appointment as Works Minister
The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Professor Philip John Kanu, on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, expressed profound joy over the appointment of Dr. Dennis Sandy as Minister of Works and Technical Maintenance. He commended Dr. Sandy’s sincere commitment and dedication during his time at MMTU, noting that his position remains vacant and difficult to fill.
Professor Kanu made these remarks during the presentation of two awards to Dr. Dennis Sandy by MMTU at the Ministry of Works’ Conference Room, New England Ville in Freetown.
Highlighting Dr. Sandy’s achievements, Professor Kanu praised him as an academic of the highest caliber, with several published books and articles to his name. He appreciated Dr. Sandy’s contributions to the growth of MMTU, stating that his journey is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He also extended his best wishes for Dr. Sandy’s new role and revealed that the Sierra Leone Roads Authority, under the Works Ministry, has committed to upgrading roads leading to MMTU’s three campuses. For the first time in its 50-year history, the Congo Cross campus will have a tarmac road.
Professor Kanu also recalled how Dr. Sandy supported him during challenging times when he faced accusations of tribalism and cyberbullying.
In his response, Dr. Dennis Sandy described life as a series of events and urged everyone to remain focused and determined to succeed. He expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that receiving the awards was unexpected. Dr. Sandy emphasized that the greatest joy of a lecturer is seeing students excel and create meaningful impact in their lives, a reflection of human capital development.
He fondly remembered his time at MMTU, reaffirming his commitment to the institution and urging its administration to seek his support whenever needed. Dr. Sandy also recounted his efforts in helping the university reclaim its land while serving as Minister of Lands.
The President of the MMTU Academic Staff Association, Mr. Ishmael Kebbay, presented a letter of appreciation to Dr. Sandy, while the Dean of the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Studies, Aminata Bangura, joined Mr. Kebbay in presenting gifts to him in recognition of his contributions.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Permanent Secretary, Madam Judith Jones.
