On November 1, 2024, thousands of prominent legal professionals gathered at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown to witness the launch of the Lawyers Society of Sierra Leone. The society’s mission is to safeguard the rule of law, enhance justice administration, and foster professional growth for legal practitioners across the country. The society’s creation was also spurred by controversies surrounding the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) Annual General Meeting in Kenema on May 18, 2024. One of the presidential candidates alleged that the election was improperly managed, disenfranchising many lawyers, which fueled calls for a new organization committed to democratic values and effective advocacy.

Margaret Davies opened the event by welcoming attendees and highlighting the importance of collaboration, innovation, and professional excellence in the legal field. She thanked all those who contributed to the society’s establishment, particularly senior lawyers whose insights were invaluable in shaping the society’s vision. Davies encouraged attendees to engage actively, share ideas, and build connections to strengthen the legal community.

Lawyer Wara Serry Kamal explained the inspiration for the society, emphasizing its commitment to defending democracy, the rule of law, and justice. She invited all legal practitioners to join the Independent Lawyers Society of Sierra Leone, which aims to empower lawyers to express their views freely and uphold democratic ideals.

The event’s Master of Ceremonies, Julian Cole, introduced three key figures Yada Williams, Fatmata Sorie, and Durcil Taylor who officially launched the Lawyers Society. The society’s commitment to inclusivity was underscored by providing junior legal professionals a platform to voice their perspectives.

The Interim Executive of the Lawyers Society was also announced, with Lawyer Augustine S.S. Marrah as President, Wara Serry Kamal as Vice President, Margaret Davies as Secretary-General, Joy Precious Bayoh as Treasurer, and Claude Bhame Davies as Public Relations Officer. The Interim Executive will oversee the society’s operations until elections are held.

President Augustine S.S. Marrah, known as “Salone Mandela,” stressed the society’s role in promoting justice, accountability, and democratic governance. He outlined an inclusive membership model open to both practicing lawyers in Sierra Leone and those in other jurisdictions who wish to contribute. The society also welcomes honorary members with significant contributions to law and governance.

To avoid conflicts of interest, Marrah clarified that while members in political or government roles may join, they are ineligible for executive positions. Additionally, executive members cannot have government retainerships to maintain impartiality. Marrah emphasized that the society intends to work alongside existing organizations, such as the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA), not replace them. Members are encouraged to participate in multiple organizations to amplify their impact.

Marrah expressed confidence in the society’s ability to meet its objectives, despite anticipated challenges. He thanked his fellow executive members, particularly Vice President Wara Serry Kamal, for their dedication and affirmed the society’s commitment to holding power holders accountable.

In a closing address, Interim PRO Claude Bhame Davies thanked attendees for their support and acknowledged the long-standing vision that had now come to fruition. He expressed appreciation for senior colleagues, the media, distinguished guests, and everyone who contributed to the society’s launch. He also recognized key contributors, including Chief Launcher Mr. Williams, Mr. Osman Jalloh, and Ibrahim, whose strategic insights were instrumental in achieving the society’s goals.

Davies concluded by expressing gratitude to all members of the project group and other stakeholders for their dedication, which made the launch event a resounding success.
