Hon. Johnson Urges Health Budget Boost, Infrastructure Growth, and Anti-Illegal Mining Action in Penguia

Honourable Margaret Johnson, a Member of Parliament representing the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) from Kailahun District, has made a passionate appeal to President Julius Maada Bio, urging him to take decisive action on multiple critical issues facing Penguia Chiefdom. In her address to the House, Hon. Johnson called for increased investment in healthcare, expanded road infrastructure, and a crackdown on illegal mining, which continues to undermine the region’s valuable resources.
The MP began by acknowledging the government’s progress in infrastructure, particularly the construction of bridges in the chiefdoms of Peje Bongre and Penguia. These projects, she noted, have brought tangible benefits to local communities, enhancing connectivity and boosting local trade. However, Hon. Johnson emphasized that much work remains to be done, especially regarding road development, which she identified as a key factor for economic growth in her constituency.
“Our roads, especially those connecting Penguia and Manowa, are vital to the prosperity of our agricultural sector,” Hon. Johnson explained. “The agricultural potential of our region is immense, but we cannot fully harness it without proper road infrastructure to connect our farmers to markets and essential services. I urge His Excellency to prioritize the construction and improvement of these roads in future development plans.”
In addition to infrastructure, Hon. Johnson highlighted the dire need for increased funding for healthcare services in Penguia Chiefdom. According to her, healthcare facilities in the region are under-resourced, and many residents lack access to adequate medical care. “Our people deserve quality healthcare,” she stressed. “I call on the government to allocate more funds to our health sector, ensuring that rural communities like ours have access to the necessary facilities, medicines, and medical personnel to address basic health needs.”
The MP then shifted her focus to a pressing issue that has long plagued Penguia Chiefdom: illegal mining. The region, known for its rich gold deposits, has faced rampant illegal mining activities that, according to Hon. Johnson, deplete local resources and leave the community without the financial and developmental benefits it should rightfully receive. She expressed her frustration, stating that while the mineral wealth of the chiefdom holds great potential for the local economy, unregulated mining has led to environmental degradation, loss of revenue, and exploitation of local lands.
“Our chiefdom is rich in gold deposits, yet illegal mining has stripped us of our resources, leaving the community without any benefit,” she declared. “I appeal to this esteemed House and particularly the Committee on Mines and Mineral Resources to address this pressing issue. It is imperative that mining agreements and regulations be enforced in a manner that safeguards our lands and ensures that our people see tangible benefits from their natural resources.”
Hon. Johnson urged the government to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures against illegal mining activities, suggesting a collaborative effort with local authorities to protect Penguia’s mineral wealth. She also advocated for transparent and community-focused agreements with mining companies to ensure that any future mining ventures prioritize the well-being of residents and contribute meaningfully to local development.

Johnson reiterated her commitment to advocating for the people of Penguia Chiefdom and called on her fellow parliamentarians and the government to support her in addressing these critical issues. “Our people are hardworking and resilient, but they need the government’s support to unlock the full potential of Penguia Chiefdom. Together, we can build a future that brings lasting benefits to our communities and improves the quality of life for all.”
