UMU BARRIE’s  LIFE UNDER THREAT

A staunch female supporter of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Umu Barrie is reported to have been under constant threat from supporters of the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) accusing her of being too critical of their government. The woman is a well known APC supporter who didn’t only campaign for her party, but equally publicly criticise the SLPP administration for bad governance leading to high cost of living for ordinary Sierra Leoneans.

Unaware that she is living in SLPP dominated community in the capital, Freetown,  Umu”s   behaviour is reported to have infuriated the SLPP supporters who promised to deal with her decisively even if it means to kill her if she fails to back down and vote for their party.

Reports indicated that things became worse for Madam  Barrie prior to and during the June 24, 2023 general elections when SLPP supporters decided to physically attack her if she continued her  critical stance against their party.  Sources further revealed that at one point, her attackers threatened  to burn  her house and children inside.

Other sources state that Umu’s woes continued even after the elections which the SLPP had already won.

The situation became so tense and unbearable for the woman and decided to report the matter to the police for protection from the frequent attacks but unfortunately she didn’t get the required response from them. This ugly development is reported to have created fear in  Umu Barrie who decided to flee the area to protect her and her son’s life.

Given what had happened to other opposition members for being critical of the current government, Umu  believes if she returns to the country her life and that of her son will be in serious danger.
