PURA Gambia Visits QCell Sierra Leone on Telecom Engagement

Freetown, Sierra Leone – As part of ongoing regional engagements aimed at strengthening collaboration within the telecommunications sector, a high-level delegation from Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) paid a courtesy visit to QCell Sierra Leone during their participation in a regional meeting hosted by the National Communications Authority (NatCA).

The visit formed part of broader discussions involving West African regulators and industry stakeholders, focused on enhancing cross-border connectivity, harmonisation of regulatory frameworks, and the implementation of regional roaming initiatives across the sub-region. Such engagements are aligned with ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation among ECOWAS member states and improve telecommunications services across borders.

During the visit, the PURA delegation was received by the management team of QCell Sierra Leone, where both sides exchanged insights on innovation, service delivery, and the evolving telecommunications landscape in West Africa.

Speaking during the engagement, the Director General of PURA commended QCell Sierra Leone for its remarkable growth and contribution to the development of the telecommunications sector in the country. He noted that QCell’s expansion from The Gambia into Sierra Leone reflects a strong model of African-led investment and regional integration, highlighting the company’s role in improving access to affordable and reliable communication services.

QCell, a Gambian-owned telecommunications company, has distinguished itself as a key player in Sierra Leone’s telecom industry, providing voice, data, and digital services while contributing to employment and infrastructure development.

The PURA Director General further encouraged the QCell management team to continue driving innovation, maintaining service quality, and expanding network reach, emphasizing that such efforts are critical to achieving inclusive digital transformation across the region. He also underscored the importance of strong collaboration between regulators and operators in fostering a competitive and consumer-focused telecommunications environment.

In response, the management of QCell Sierra Leone expressed appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting national development goals while aligning with regional best practices. They reiterated their readiness to work closely with regulatory authorities and industry stakeholders to enhance service delivery and contribute to the success of regional integration initiatives.
