Budapest–Bamako Rally to End in Freetown in 2026

The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed that Freetown will once again host the official finish of the internationally acclaimed Budapest–Bamako Rally in 2026, a development seen as a major boost to the country’s tourism drive and international visibility.
In a press release dated January 15, 2026, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs announced that it will collaborate with the National Tourist Board, the Monuments and Relics Commission, VSLTRAVEL, other key government institutions, and private sector partners to organize and host the finish line activities of the 2026 Budapest–Bamako–Freetown Challenge.
The Budapest–Bamako Rally is regarded as one of the world’s largest amateur adventure and charity rallies, attracting hundreds of vehicles and participants from across Europe and beyond. The rally traditionally begins in Budapest, Hungary, and journeys across multiple European and African countries before ending in West Africa. For the 2026 edition, Freetown has once again been confirmed as the final destination, reaffirming Sierra Leone’s growing reputation as a reliable host of major international events.
According to the Ministry, rally participants will arrive in Sierra Leone in two separate phases. The first batch is expected to enter the country on February 8, 2026, comprising 352 vehicles and 794 participants. This group will camp overnight at Bureh Beach on February 9, followed by the official Finish Line Ceremony later that day.
The second batch will arrive on March 5, 2026, with 203 vehicles and 492 participants. They will also camp overnight at Bureh Beach before concluding their journey with a Finish Line Ceremony on March 6, 2026.
Participants will enter Sierra Leone through the Balamuya/Kamawi and Madina Oula border crossings in Kambia District. From there, the rally convoy will travel through Kambia, Gbaray Junction, Kamakwie, Kabba Ferry, Masiaka, Mile 91, Waterloo, and the Waterloo–Tombo Highway to Bureh Beach. The final procession into Freetown will pass through key city routes including the Waterloo. Freetown Highway, Up Gun, Kissy Road, Eastern Police, Abacha Street, Siaka Stevens Street, St. John, Congo Cross, and Wilkinson Road, before culminating at the Gigibonta Car Park at Lumley Beach.
Sierra Leone has successfully hosted five Budapest–Bamako Rally finish line events since 2020. These successful editions have strengthened confidence in the country’s capacity to manage large-scale international events, earning Sierra Leone a long-term commitment from rally organizers. As a result, Freetown has been designated the official finish destination for a ten-year period, spanning from 2024 to 2034.
The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs noted that the 2026 rally aligns with Sierra Leone’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of Culture and Creativity, providing a unique opportunity to showcase the nation’s rich cultural heritage, diverse tourism offerings, and renowned hospitality to a global audience.
Beyond global exposure, authorities say the rally is expected to deliver tangible socio-economic benefits, including increased patronage for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, artisans, and small businesses. The event is also anticipated to create short- and long-term employment opportunities, support community development initiatives, promote environmental awareness projects, and deepen cultural exchange between Sierra Leoneans and international visitors.
The Ministry has therefore called on communities along the rally routes, local authorities, security agencies, and the media to support the event and extend a warm welcome to participants. Officials described the Budapest–Bamako Rally not only as a tourism spectacle, but also as a symbol of Sierra Leone’s peace, stability, and openness to the world.
