Hon. Chericoco’s Resignation…

A Bold Step Toward Upholding the APC Constitution

By Benjamin S Conteh

The voluntary resignation of Honorable Chernoh Ramadan Maju Bah, popularly known as Chericoco, from his role as Deputy National Leader of the All Peoples Congress (APC) underscores his selfless commitment to upholding the rule of law, as enshrined in the APC constitution.

This significant decision comes in the wake of the contentious 2023 elections, in which Hon. Chericoco and Dr. Samura Kamara were nominated as the APC’s presidential candidate and running mate. These elections were marred by allegations of irregularities raised by both local and international observers. However, the APC refrained from pursuing legal action due to the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone’s refusal to release the full election results.

In the aftermath of the disputed elections, Hon. Chericoco took a firm stand, refusing to participate in governance under what he considered an illegitimate government. His leadership contributed to the formation of a Tripartite Committee to investigate the election discrepancies and the establishment of an Agreement for National Unity, aimed at restoring political stability in Sierra Leone.

Demonstrating his commitment to party governance, Hon. Chericoco recently handed over the office keys to mark his formal resignation, in line with the APC’s constitution. This act was a powerful symbolic gesture, reflecting his adherence to the party’s principles and setting an important example for leadership accountability.

During the handover ceremony, Hon. Chericoco expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has been given within the party and reaffirmed his willingness to continue serving the APC in any capacity. His resignation follows the mandates of Article 47 of the APC constitution, which stipulates that the Deputy National Leader position must be vacated following a presidential election loss.

Hon. Chericoco’s move has triggered discussions on the party’s future leadership and the upcoming presidential candidate selection process, highlighting the need for constitutional compliance. Attention now turns to Dr. Samura Kamara, with many expecting him to follow in Hon. Chericoco’s footsteps and prioritize the party’s governance principles.

Ultimately, Hon. Chericoco’s actions reflect his unwavering commitment to the rule of law, demonstrating ethical leadership that sets a high standard within the APC.
