Sierra Leone’s Image in Crisis: A Call for Accountability
By Hon. Abdul Kargbo
Leader of the Opposition, Parliament of Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone stands today at a troubling crossroads. Our national image, once anchored in resilience and hope, is now being dragged through the mud of international scandal and disgrace. Each passing day brings new revelations that threaten to undo decades of diplomatic progress and stain the pride of every law-abiding Sierra Leonean. The time has come for us, as a people, to confront these realities with honesty, courage, and urgency.
Recently, the world watched in disbelief as bags of cocaine were discovered in an official government vehicle belonging to our own embassy in Guinea. This is not merely an embarrassment it is a monumental betrayal of trust. Our embassies are supposed to embody the dignity, discipline, and integrity of Sierra Leone. Instead, this shameful incident has reduced our diplomatic missions to global headlines of mockery and suspicion.
How did we get here? How did the institutions entrusted with safeguarding our sovereignty and reputation become enablers of criminal networks? For the first time in our nation’s history, the name “Sierra Leone” is being uttered in connection with international drug trafficking and worse, by the very institutions meant to uphold our good name abroad.
Equally distressing is the shocking revelation that a world-wanted drug lord has been found in possession of a Sierra Leonean passport bearing a local name. This scandal is not isolated. Reports continue to emerge from another drug trafficker, recently arrested in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to Turkey, who was also carrying a Sierra Leonean passport. The question now confronting every concerned citizen is: How deep does this rot go? How many more criminals around the world are walking free under the protection of our national identity?
These revelations expose the dangerous extent to which our passport and citizenship issuance systems have been compromised. It is no longer a mere administrative lapse it is a national security emergency. Our passports, once symbols of pride and belonging, have become instruments of corruption and crime. This is a direct assault on the moral fabric of our society and a damning indictment of those entrusted with public office.
Even more troubling is the continued harboring of a known drug lord within our borders despite multiple international extradition requests. Such deliberate protection of criminal elements sends a chilling message to the world: that Sierra Leone is fast becoming a safe haven for organized crime, protected by official complicity and political silence.
This is not just a scandal it is a moral collapse. It is the single greatest act of betrayal any government can commit against its own people. Our nation’s reputation, hard-earned over decades of sacrifice and diplomacy, now hangs by a thread because of greed, corruption, and impunity at the highest levels.
Sierra Leone must not and cannot continue down this shameful path. We must demand full transparency and accountability. Those responsible regardless of position or political affiliation must be investigated, prosecuted, and brought to justice. Our diplomatic institutions must be restructured, and our passport issuance systems cleansed of corruption once and for all.
The international community is watching. Investors are watching. Our children are watching. The world must see a Sierra Leone that is willing to correct its mistakes, not one that hides them.
Let us reclaim our dignity. Let us restore our credibility. Let us once again raise the green, white, and blue not as a banner of scandal, but as a proud symbol of integrity, unity, and hope.
Sierra Leone must rise again and the time for that rise is now.
