In a move set to redefine access to clean and safe water in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has unveiled two major water projects during the USA edition of the Civic Day Series organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE). The announcement highlights the government’s commitment to public health, sanitation, and sustainable development.

Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Engineer Amara Kallon, revealed that the projects are designed to significantly expand and improve the country’s water supply and sanitation systems. He provided details on the Freetown WASH and Aquatic Environment Revamping Project, currently 65% complete, which is expected to directly benefit over one million residents in Freetown by improving water availability, quality, and sanitation infrastructure.

In addition, Engineer Kallon announced the Sierra Leone Water Security and WASH Access Improvement Project, a $180 million initiative funded by the World Bank. This ambitious project aims to reach five million people across the country, ensuring that both urban and rural communities gain reliable access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities.
“These projects are central to our government’s broader strategy to enhance public health, reduce water-related hardship, and ensure sustainable development across Sierra Leone,” Engineer Kallon stated. “The benefits will not only be felt in Freetown but will extend to rural communities, where water access remains a critical challenge.”
The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from attendees, particularly members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora, who praised the government’s focus on sustainable development and tangible infrastructure improvements. The Civic Day Series, a flagship engagement platform by MoICE, continues to provide a bridge between the government and Sierra Leoneans both at home and abroad, fostering dialogue, feedback, and collaborative efforts toward national progress.

Participants hailed the initiatives as timely and transformative, highlighting their potential to improve public health, bolster economic growth, and uplift the quality of life for millions of Sierra Leoneans. The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation reaffirmed its commitment to delivering these projects efficiently, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to ensuring that every citizen benefits from reliable and safe water access.
