Prof. Alpha Wurie Named Chancellor of Limkokwing University Sierra Leone

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Sierra Leone, has officially appointed Professor Alpha Tejan Wurie, Presidential Adviser at State House, as Chancellor of the institution a move widely viewed as a recognition of his decades-long contribution to education, science, and national development.
The appointment was confirmed in a letter dated 8th August 2025, signed by Dato Gail Phung, Senior Vice President for Corporate Development at Limkokwing University. The letter described Prof. Wurie as an individual whose “immense knowledge and experience in education and human capital development will be invaluable in steering the University to play a defining role in Sierra Leone’s development.”
Your leadership of the University Court will no doubt inspire both the faculty and students of the University to become a leading institution in the country,” the letter further stated.
A Lifetime of Service to Education and National Development
Accepting the appointment with gratitude, Prof. Alpha Tejan Wurie expressed his commitment to advancing the University’s vision of creativity, innovation, and excellence.
It is with deep appreciation and a profound sense of responsibility that I formally accept this appointment,” Prof. Wurie wrote. “I am truly honored by the confidence reposed in me, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the University community to uphold and advance the institution’s enduring values of integrity, excellence, and service.”
A distinguished academic and public servant, Prof. Wurie holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and has devoted much of his professional life to education and governance. Between 1996 and 2007, he served as Minister of Education under the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, where he championed reforms in curriculum development, teacher training, and access to education.
He later served as Minister of Health and Sanitation from 2018 to 2023 under President Julius Maada Bio, where he led initiatives to strengthen Sierra Leone’s healthcare system, particularly during the post-Ebola recovery phase and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognitions and Academic Honors
Over the years, Prof. Wurie’s remarkable contributions have earned him several national and international honors.
In 2006, he received the Commander of the Republic of Sierra Leone (CORSL) award from President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah one of the country’s highest civilian honors.
In 2021, he was admitted as an Honorary Fellow of the Postgraduate College of Physicians and Surgeons.
In 2023, he was conferred with a Doctor of Science (DSc) degree in recognition of his exceptional work in Physical Science, Medical Science, and Tertiary Education.

As Chancellor, Prof. Wurie is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Limkokwing University’s academic and strategic direction. His appointment comes at a time when the institution is expanding its creative and entrepreneurial programs to equip young Sierra Leoneans with practical skills for the modern economy.
