Rising Demand for National ID Cards Puts Pressure on NCRA Services
The demand for both National and Non-National Identity Cards in Sierra Leone has surged significantly, as access to essential public and private services is now increasingly tied to these documents. From financial transactions to health, education, and travel services, citizens and residents alike are finding that an ID card is no longer optional but a necessity.
Across the country, long queues have been forming outside offices of the National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA), with applicants eager to secure their National or Non-National ID cards. The surge in demand has not only highlighted the importance of these documents but also exposed challenges in accessibility, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
In an encouraging move, the Director General of NCRA, Mohamed Mubashir Massaquoi, recently announced that persons with disabilities in three Western Area communities would be exempted from paying fees for the National ID card. The decision has been welcomed as a step toward inclusivity and equal access to essential services.
Meanwhile, during a nationwide visit to district and regional NCRA offices, the Chairman of NCRA, Sorie Fofana, acknowledged growing concerns about access and efficiency. He admitted that a strong case has been made for the decentralization of NCRA services to chiefdom level, noting that it would significantly ease the burden on applicants in rural communities.
Chairman Fofana assured the public that he would be working closely with the Director General to accelerate the decentralization process. He disclosed that the Authority has already started establishing satellite outlets in remote areas, with the first outlet opened at Mile 91 in the Tonkolili District, and another expected soon in Lungi, Port Loko District.
The NCRA Chairman also commended Constrat Systems (SL) Limited, the company contracted to produce and print National, Non-National, and ECOWAS Identity Cards in Sierra Leone, praising their professionalism and commitment to delivering quality services amid rising demand.
As the number of applicants continues to climb, the call for efficient, decentralized, and accessible ID card services grows louder, signaling the urgent need for innovative solutions to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population of ID card holders.
