Freetown, Monday 15 September 2025. The Youth Alliance for Democracy and Accountability (YADA-SL), in partnership with the National Commission for Democracy (NCD) and with support from IDEA International, organized a “Democracy Walk” to commemorate the International Day of Democracy 2025. This year’s global theme, “Democracy Under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World,” framed the event’s focus on citizen participation and resilience in democratic governance.

Speaking during the program, Foday Moriba Conteh, Executive Director of YADA-SL, stressed that the walk went beyond symbolism. He described it as “a reminder that democracy is not a finished product it is a continuous journey that requires the participation, vigilance and courage of all citizens.”

Conteh reflected on Sierra Leone’s history, warning of the dangers of division and silence while emphasizing the critical role of youth in safeguarding democratic space. He urged young people to hold leaders accountable, defend peace and justice, and promote inclusion.

Highlighting global challenges such as disinformation, polarization, economic hardship and declining trust in institutions, Conteh noted that the solutions lie in dialogue, respect for the rule of law and active citizenship rooted in integrity. He commended NCD, IDEA International, media partners and all young participants, saying their presence showed a collective commitment to building a Sierra Leone where democracy thrives, rights are respected and no one is left behind.

“As we leave here, let us remember that democracy cannot survive on slogans or ceremonies alone. It needs action, responsibility and sacrifice,” Conteh concluded, calling on participants to act as ambassadors of democratic values in their communities.

Addressing the gathering, Marian Angela Samu, Chairperson of the NCD, praised YADA-SL for leading the Democracy Walk and highlighted the Commission’s longstanding collaboration with the youth-led organization. She reaffirmed that young people are central to Sierra Leone’s democratic future, noting: “This is not just a celebration at the international level; we are celebrating at the local level. That is why we must recognize the key players locally and you, the young people, are those key players.”

Participants also expressed gratitude to YADA-SL, NCD and IDEA International for organizing the event, which they said offered them a platform to engage, learn and demonstrate their commitment to strengthening democracy. “Your efforts in involving young people show that our voices matter in shaping a more inclusive and accountable future,” they concluded.
