Koroma Vows Continued Reform in Petroleum Sector

By Benjamin S Conteh

Freetown, Sierra Leone The Director General of the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA), Brima Baluwa Koroma, has reaffirmed his institution’s strong commitment to transformative change within Sierra Leone’s petroleum sector, declaring that “We’ve pushed for dramatic reform.”

Mr. Koroma stressed that the NPRA’s reform agenda is firmly rooted in transparency, accountability, and efficiency. He highlighted that under his leadership, the Authority has introduced forward-looking policies aimed at modernizing regulation, strengthening compliance, and ensuring that petroleum operations deliver maximum benefits to the people of Sierra Leone.

According to him, the ongoing reforms are designed not only to streamline operations in the sector but also to attract credible investment, safeguard consumer interests, and rebuild trust with international partners.

The petroleum sector plays a vital role in our economy, and the reforms we are implementing are bold steps to ensure it is governed in a way that prioritizes national interest while opening up opportunities for innovation and growth,” Mr. Koroma affirmed.

Observers and industry experts note that the NPRA’s reform-driven approach has already started to reshape the sector by tackling long-standing issues such as price stability, licensing irregularities, and enforcement gaps.

Mr. Koroma further assured the public that the Authority remains unwavering in its drive to implement changes that will enhance energy security, stabilize fuel supply, and create a level playing field for all stakeholders. He pointed out that Sierra Leone, once plagued by persistent fuel shortages, can today boast relative stability in its petroleum supply chain an achievement many attribute to effective leadership and strategic reforms at the NPRA.

The institution’s success has not gone unnoticed. Both ordinary citizens and government officials have commended the substantial progress made in ensuring a steady supply of petroleum products. This positive sentiment was recently echoed by Myke Berewa, the Director of Communication at State House, during a live interview on Liberty TV Online. While reflecting on President Julius Maada Bio’s accomplishments, Berewa singled out the NPRA’s reforms as a shining example of how strong governance and sound policies can translate into tangible benefits for the people.

With the petroleum sector serving as a critical pillar of Sierra Leone’s economy, the NPRA under Mr. Koroma’s leadership continues to demonstrate that reform, when pursued with vision and commitment, can deliver lasting change for national development.
