Sierra Leone Sports Minister Shines in Kigali

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, has placed the nation firmly on the continental map after delivering an inspiring performance at the Africa Sports Forum for High-Level Policy Makers and Stakeholders, held from 9–10 September 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.

The prestigious forum, co-hosted by the African Union Sports Council, Rwanda’s Ministry of Sports, and Rwanda Events Ltd., convened senior government officials, international sports organizations, investors, and youth advocates from across the continent. Its central themes revolved around sports as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and trade integration under the AfCFTA, as well as strategic investment in infrastructure, innovation in youth programming, and harmonization of national and continental policies.

Minister James-Teima’s Vision for Sierra Leone

During the roundtable, Madam James-Teima delivered a well-received presentation titled:
“Transforming National Sports through Tourism, Trade, Grassroots Investment, and Inclusive Policy.”

She outlined Sierra Leone’s achievements in:

Aligning sports with the country’s National Development Goals,

Promoting transparency and reforms in sports governance,

Expanding investment in sports infrastructure, and

Creating opportunities for young athletes through grassroots and community-based initiatives.

The Minister emphasized that sports must not be seen solely as competition, but as a powerful tool for peace building, youth empowerment, cultural diplomacy, and sustainable development. Her delivery drew strong commendation from fellow ministers, development partners, and stakeholders present at the forum.

Regional Impact and Recognition

Attendees praised Sierra Leone’s progress in modernizing sports policy and the country’s commitment to using sports as a springboard for national cohesion, international cooperation, and economic advancement. Delegates particularly highlighted the importance of Sierra Leone’s reforms in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063: “The Africa We Want.”

She returned to Freetown on Friday, 12 September 2025, to warm commendations from her ministry and the wider sporting community.
