Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai: Emerging as the People’s Choice for SLPP 2028

As Sierra Leone moves closer to another crucial election season, conversations within the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) are heating up over who should succeed as flagbearer in 2028. Among the names most frequently mentioned, one figure continues to attract widespread admiration for his integrity, service, and grassroots appeal Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai. Though no official endorsement has been made, many observers and citizens alike are increasingly describing him as the “people’s choice.”

Proven track record in public service and Reform, Dr. Abdulai first rose to prominence as Executive Director of the Society for Democratic Initiatives (SDI), where he championed landmark reforms such as the Right to Access Information Act and the Sexual Offences Act. His advocacy strengthened democratic accountability and expanded protections for vulnerable groups, earning him respect across civil society and among ordinary Sierra Leoneans.

Later, as head of the National Sports Authority (NSA), he introduced reforms to promote transparency, improve sports infrastructure, and build capacity among athletes and administrators injecting new life into a sector long plagued by neglect.

Beyond politics, Dr. Abdulai’s leadership extends into academia and grassroots development. As Head of the Law Department at Fourah Bay College, he continues shaping the next generation of legal minds. In sports, he is celebrated for reviving the Sierra Leone Premier League in 2019 and for his ongoing role as CEO of Luawa FC, demonstrating his commitment to youth empowerment and national pride.

At the community level, he has invested in agriculture, offered scholarships to underprivileged students, and championed anti-drug campaigns evidence of a leadership style deeply rooted in service to people.

Perhaps his greatest asset is his reputation for integrity. A long-time defender of civil liberties and transparent governance, Dr. Abdulai has built public trust across diverse sections of society. His ability to balance roles in law, education, sports, and civil society has made him a respected national figure.

The SLPP’s 2028 Landscape, with internal divisions surfacing within the SLPP and growing public dissatisfaction with aspects of current governance, the party faces a test of unity heading into 2028. Traditional contenders including Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, and former diplomat Dr. Alie Kabba are already in the spotlight. Yet, Dr. Abdulai’s civic background, reformist track record, and grassroots credibility present him as a fresh, unifying alternative.

For many Sierra Leoneans, he embodies authentic leadership rooted in service, accountability, and people-first values qualities the nation urgently seeks.

As the SLPP weighs its options, one fact stands out: Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai has emerged as a formidable contender, increasingly seen as the people’s choice for the party’s future.
