Air Sierra Leone Takes Flight: New Airline Promises Enhanced Travel Experience
In a landmark event for Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, Air Sierra Leone was officially launched at New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The airline is set to begin operations on December 2, 2024, with its inaugural flight from Freetown to London’s Gatwick Airport.
The launch was attended by government officials, industry stakeholders, and members of the press, all celebrating the new private airline’s potential to elevate Sierra Leone’s position in the global aviation market.
Transport and Aviation Minister Alhaji Fanday Turay praised the airline’s capacity to create employment, especially for young female tourism graduates in roles like air hostesses. He clarified that while Air Sierra Leone will serve as a national flag carrier, it remains privately owned, ensuring competitive services and operational efficiency.
Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), emphasized the regulatory measures being taken to ensure Air Sierra Leone’s safety and compliance. She noted that the airline is pursuing a Sierra Leonean Air Operator Certificate (AOC) as part of efforts to lift the country from the EU aviation blacklist.
Air Sierra Leone CEO Emmanuel Iza outlined an ambitious three-phase expansion plan, starting with regional routes in West Africa and expanding to Europe and the U.S. Introductory fares for the Freetown-London route are set at $999, with a promotional rate of $750.
The airline will begin operations with three aircraft, including two Boeing 737 jets and a 50-seater Embraer, and will offer local cuisine onboard. The launch event, chaired by Information Minister Chernor Bah, marked the beginning of a new era of progress and connectivity for Sierra Leone.
