His multifaceted contributions make him not just a politician in waiting, but a transformative leader already shaping Sierra Leone’s future.
Legal Advocacy & Human Rights
As Executive Director of the Society for Democratic Initiatives (SDI), Dr. Abdulai was instrumental in championing transparency, anti-corruption, open data, and civic freedoms. Under his leadership, SDI helped usher landmark legislation such as the Right to Access Information Act and the Sexual Offences Act into law.
He also played a key role in drafting critical legislation, including the Freedom of Information Bill (2013), the Devolution of Estates Act, the Extractive Industry Transparency Law, the Mines and Minerals Act, and the Matrimonial Causes Bill.
In 2013, he was recognized as one of Sierra Leone’s top legal practitioners, defending rights-based cases
ranging from trade union rights to challenges against criminal libel laws while also advancing legal aid through the Lawyers for Human Rights initiative.

Currently serving as Head of the Law Department at Fourah Bay College (FBC), University of Sierra Leone, Dr. Abdulai is shaping the next generation of legal professionals by blending academic excellence with a commitment to social justice.

In 2019, as Chairman of the Premier League Board, he oversaw what many regard as the league’s most successful season.
Since April 2024, as Executive Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), he has been implementing the long-overdue NSA Act, refurbishing facilities such as the Bo Stadium, improving staff welfare, and making the Authority more relevant to grassroots communities.
Through initiatives like the “Catch Them Young” campaign, he has used sports as a tool to combat social challenges such as drug abuse, while investing in youth tournaments in places like Kenema and Makeni.
As CEO of Luawa FC and a former Chairman of Old Edwardians FC, he has nurtured grassroots talent and provided both financial and administrative support to local football.

Dr. Abdulai has consistently invested in the next generation. At Government Model Secondary School in Freetown, he awarded scholarships covering tuition, materials, uniforms, and exam fees. A seasoned activist and communicator, Dr. Abdulai is the publisher of News Watch Newspaper and co-founder of the Renaissance Movement of Sierra Leone, a platform that has amplified governance and reform voices. His courage earned him international recognition through the Giraffe Heroes Project, which honored him for defending the marginalized despite harassment and threats.
