Africell Driving Digital Transformation and Nationwide Connectivity

Parliament’s Committee on Communication, Technology, and Innovation has lauded Africell Sierra Leone for its leadership in expanding digital access and strengthening connectivity across the country. During an oversight visit to the company’s Freetown headquarters on Thursday, 21st August 2025, the committee engaged with Africell’s leadership, gaining insights into its achievements, ongoing innovations, and ambitious plans for national expansion.

Chief Executive Officer Shadi Gerjawi welcomed the delegation and outlined Africell’s remarkable growth since entering the Sierra Leonean market. He underscored the company’s leading role in mobile network expansion, 4G coverage, and readiness for next-generation services. “Africell has grown to become a network for the people, delivering connectivity where it matters most and empowering communities through technology,” Gerjawi noted. He highlighted Africell’s focus on innovation, digital literacy, and social responsibility, stressing that technology is a driver of economic and social transformation.

The company has invested heavily in extending coverage to underserved areas, ensuring rural communities gain access to reliable high-speed internet and mobile services. Gerjawi also spotlighted Africell’s contributions to education, health, and youth empowerment
through training programs, mentorship, and digital tools that equip Sierra Leoneans with the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy.

Parliamentary Committee Chairman Honourable Boston Munda praised Africell for maintaining affordability while expanding coverage nationwide. He reminded the company that quality of service and tangible benefits for citizens remain Parliament’s top priorities. Other members echoed calls for deeper rural expansion and encouraged Africell to sustain initiatives that empower young people and communities.

Africell’s strategy blends technological investment with social impact. Its modernised network has improved call quality and internet speeds, while services in mobile money, e-learning, and digital entrepreneurship are opening new opportunities across the nation. Gerjawi reiterated Africell’s mission to serve not only as a telecom provider but also as a partner in Sierra Leone’s development.

The visit reinforced the importance of collaboration between government, regulators, and private operators in advancing the country’s digital agenda. For Africell, it validated progress made and highlighted how strategic investment and community-focused programs are transforming lives.
