Sierra Leoneans Shine at African Development Conference
Sierra Leone made a remarkable mark at the 2025 African Development Conference held at the Capital Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the nation distinguished itself through influential panel discussions and a record number of continental awards.

The country emerged as one of the most celebrated delegations, boasting the highest representation in key sessions and the largest number of awardees honoured at the prestigious gathering. Four Sierra Leoneans walked away with top continental accolades, a testament to the nation’s growing leadership and influence in Africa’s socio-economic transformation.
Three distinguished Sierra Leonean leaders headlined major thematic sessions, receiving standing ovations for their insights and expertise:
Dr. Kadie Grace-Kamara, Deputy Minister of Tourism, spoke on “Building the Africa We Want: The Governance Perspective.”
Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, CEO of Rokel Commercial Bank, delivered a powerful presentation on “Building the Africa We Want: Banking and FINTECH Perspective.”

Mr. Joseph Ben-Kaifala Esq, CEO of Sengbe Piah Academy, engaged delegates on “Partnering for Progress: Building the Africa We Want Through Private Sector Leadership.”
At the award ceremony, Sierra Leoneans dominated the honours list:
Dr. Kadie Grace-Kamara Outstanding Personality in Tourism and Culture across Africa
Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin Exceptional Services in Innovative Logistics and Banking Solutions; Rokel Commercial Bank was also named Commercial Bank of the Year
Mr. Joseph Ben-Kaifala Esq Outstanding Personality in Girl Child Empowerment across Africa
Mr. Salim Sillah, Technical Officer at Leone Rock Metal Group (in absentia) Outstanding Personality in Mineral Research and Exploration
Sierra Leone’s achievements were commended by H.E. Harold Bundu Saffa, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Ethiopia, who congratulated the honourees on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone. He described the recognition as proof of the country’s rising influence in continental affairs.
The African Development Conference, held under the theme “Empowering Africa: Driving Inter-Trade Partnership Opportunities,” convened policymakers, private sector leaders, and innovators from across the continent. The event highlighted outstanding contributions to Africa’s progress while promoting trade, investment, and strategic partnerships.
With its stellar performance in Addis Ababa, Sierra Leone has reinforced its role as a champion of innovation, governance, and shared prosperity on the African stage.
