A Steady Hand for a Nation in Crisis: Why Dr. Ibrahim Bangura Stands Out

Sierra Leone is at a crossroads. After years of broken promises and worsening hardship, the country is searching for direction. The cost of living keeps climbing, youth unemployment remains widespread, and access to basic services like healthcare and education is still far too limited. Across the nation, there is a growing sense of disillusionment not just with policy failures, but with a political class that seems out of touch with everyday realities.

This moment demands leadership that speaks to the pain people are feeling, while offering practical and credible solutions. It calls for leaders who don’t just talk about change but know how to deliver it.

As the main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC) has an opportunity and a responsibility to present Sierra Leoneans with a genuine alternative. That means putting forward a presidential candidate who has not only the vision but the capability and integrity to lead. Among the contenders, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura has emerged as a serious and prepared figure whose platform responds directly to the nation’s most pressing needs.

Dr. Bangura’s campaign is grounded in policy, not slogans. His vision focuses on equipping young people with digital and agricultural skills through regional tech hubs, boosting women-led enterprises, and expanding access to rural healthcare with new clinic infrastructure. He also speaks candidly about the need for better governance, particularly in mining, and calls for institutional reform and national reconciliation.

These are not empty pledges. They are rooted in a proven record of service. Between 2013 and 2016, Dr. Bangura served as a Security Sector Reform Advisor in a UK-backed initiative and played a key role in crafting Sierra Leone’s national justice strategies. His work with ECOWAS on regional frameworks for women, peace and security as well as his contribution to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism planning further demonstrates his capacity to translate policy into action.

Beyond the policy documents, Dr. Bangura’s campaign has emphasized listening and outreach. During Ramadan, he visited communities across the country, hosted public forums, and supported public health education efforts like the Mpox awareness campaign. These actions reflect a candidate who engages with citizens, not just as voters, but as partners in the process of national rebuilding.

As the APC convention approaches, the stakes could not be higher. Choosing a presidential candidate must go beyond party loyalty or regional considerations. It is a decision that carries national consequences. The people of Sierra Leone have waited long enough for leadership that puts them first.

Dr. Ibrahim Bangura represents a departure from politics as usual. He offers a thoughtful, grounded, and experience-driven approach at a time when the country needs exactly that. If the APC truly wants to present a compelling alternative in 2025, it should look no further.
