By Kadiatu Sankoh
In a moment of triumph and continued excellence, Mackie M. Jalloh, one of Sierra Leone’s brightest and most dedicated journalists, has once again etched his name into the nation’s media history. On the evening of May 10, 2025, at the Freetown International Conference Centre in Bintumani, Mackie was honoured with the Young Creative Journalist of the Year Award at the prestigious National Heroes Awards, organized by the Heroes Media Group.
This latest accolade comes exactly one month after Mackie secured 2nd Position in the Print Media Category for West Africa at the globally recognized Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards on April 10, 2025. That international honour marked a major breakthrough, making him the first Sierra Leonean journalist to ever be recognized by the Merck Foundation an achievement that sparked national pride.
To earn two significant journalism awards in just one month is no ordinary feat. It is a clear testament to Mackie’s unwavering professionalism, ethical depth, and exceptional storytelling ability. His reporting style not only informs but also empowers, highlighting voices and issues that are often overlooked.
The Heroes Media Group’s citation summed up Mackie’s impact:
“In an era where credible and trustworthy news sources are crucial, you are a trusted source of reliable information, guiding the people of Sierra Leone. Your dedication to presenting the truth, giving voice to the voiceless, and offering critical analysis for progress has left an indelible mark on the nation’s media landscape.”
Through it all, Mackie remains humble and grounded. He attributes his success to divine guidance, stating, “All praises be to Allah. Without His guidance, favour, and protection, none of this would be possible.”
He also extended heartfelt gratitude to his mentors, bosses, family, and community those who have stood by him throughout his journey. From his early days as a budding journalist, Mackie has consistently upheld values of truth, integrity, and justice qualities that have earned him respect across national and international media circles.
This latest honour underscores the vital role of nurturing young, ethical journalists in Sierra Leone’s democratic journey. In a media environment often challenged by political, corporate, and societal pressures, journalists like Mackie serve as beacons of truth, proving that the pen when guided by courage and integrity is indeed mightier than any force of misinformation.
As the nation celebrates this rising star, we pray that Allah continues to bless Mackie with wisdom, protection, and further breakthroughs.
Congratulations once again, Mackie M. Jalloh. Your journey of impact has only just begun.
