Frequent Fires in Freetown Blamed on Power Issues, Citizens Demand Action

By Emmanuel S Conteh

Freetown, Sierra Leone A series of devastating fire incidents have been reported across multiple communities in Freetown and other places, with many homes reduced to ashes. These fires are believed to be caused by unstable electricity supply, which has been a growing concern in the country. Citizens have raised alarm over the poor management of electricity distribution, blaming the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) for failing to address the issue.

According to affected residents, the fires are triggered by sudden voltage fluctuations, which occur due to the country’s persistent power shortages. In some cases, households experience extremely low power output that cannot even sustain basic electrical appliances, while in other instances, unexpected surges cause electrical faults that result in fires.

Despite the increasing destruction, EDSA has yet to make a public statement explaining the cause of the erratic power supply. This lack of communication has fueled frustration among Sierra Leoneans, who are now calling on the government to intervene immediately. If urgent action is not taken, angry citizens warn they will take to the streets of Freetown in protest, demanding a permanent solution to the electricity crisis.

The ongoing power supply challenges have further worsened daily life in Sierra Leone. The country is already struggling with economic hardships, including inflation and heavy traffic congestion. Now, the unreliable electricity supply has made it even more difficult for businesses and households to function effectively. Many citizens are unable to power essential appliances, worsening their living conditions.

Residents are urging the government to address the root causes of the electricity crisis, hold EDSA accountable, and implement lasting solutions. If not, the country risks continued destruction from fire incidents and growing public unrest.
